One bareroot pawpaw (Asimina triloba) seedling. A North American native, pawpaw grows as a large shrub or small tree, generally reaching heights of about 20 feet. Pawpaw prefers shade and moist soils, and one plant may form a thicket over time as new shoots are produced from its creeping root system. Produces small purple flowers in the spring, which give way to large yellow-green fruits in late summer.
Also known as Kentucky banana, pawpaw fruits have a custardy texture and sweet, tropical flavor. Pawpaws are self-infertile, requiring two or more plants to produce fruit. Pawpaw trees are the exclusive larval host of the zebra swallowtail butterfly. Hardy to zone 5 (-20 F).
